Someone (or something) beyond normal is there who (or which) comes up in contact with normal, and then it ends up in a romance between the two - this is what the structure of a paranormal-romance is.
Though a sub genre of regular romance, a paranormal-romance has more arrows in its quiver to shoot. They may be vampires, shape shifters, ghosts, time travel, or characters with psychic abilities, like telekinesis or telepathy along with romance that makes the back-bone of a paranormal-romance.
The paranormal genre is Gothic in its spirit and nature. All paranormal phenomena is beyond the range of scientific explanation. So it has an element of suspense coming from the mystery that the paranormal-romance envelopes it in.
Paranormal romances are one of the fastest growing trends in the romance genre.
